Beverage Photography

With so many great wineries and breweries in the Columbia Gorge, it seems almost inevitable that I would start doing product photography for the beverage industry. Sometimes, I’m photographing the latest bottling from Naked Winery or Cathedral Ridge using a custom lighting setup in my studio using motivated light to create a soft gradient reflection on the shoulders of the bottle, and other times, I’m doing more stylized hero shots.

Frequently, I’m creating assets for use in eCommerce, where the requirement is to light the product perfectly — controlling for reflections and ensuring that the label is clear and readable, and that the colors and tonal rendering are spot on.

In these situations, I’m often blending two or three exposures together in Photoshop using layer masks to get things looking just right, then I create vector clipping paths around each bottle so the background can be masked out and the file can be saved as a PNG with a transparent alpha channel so it’s optimized and ready to be dropped onto the product page in the client’s eCommerce system.

Beyond bottles, there are other items that I’m sometimes asked to photograph including glassware, stemware and cork screws.

I work with each client’s marketing team to develop a unique lighting pattern and look that matches their brand or preferences. For Naked Winery, they wanted to create bottles that are bold and shapely, with clamshell lighting and balanced symmetry.

I’m always up for a new challenge, so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need product photography for your food and beverage products.
